Project Synopsis

Merita Oramaa (whilst working at BDP) worked on Varley Halls. The University of Brighton campus is located on a steeply sloping hill on the edge of the South Downs. The design for the redevelopment of the campus provides accommodation for 550 students and a social hub building which was designed to be progressed in phases whilst enabling the campus to continue to function.

The proposed buildings follow the steeply sloping contours of the site which helps to maximise the usable outside space, and open views down the valley. Changes of building form provide individual identity for the different accommodation types, whilst a limited materials palette unifies and establishes a cohesive whole.
